About the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) ProgramThe Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Program assists students in acquiring high-level competence in languages critical to the needs of the United States. FLAS also promotes a fuller understanding of the areas, regions, or countries in which that language is commonly used. FLAS is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time at Syracuse University and who are studying less commonly taught South Asian languages at the intermediate to advanced level. Graduate students may apply for an exemption to study Hindi-Urdu at the beginner level. FLAS Academic Year Fellowships are awarded for study in Hindi-Urdu. Those fellowships include a scholarship of $10,000 toward the cost of tuition and $5,000 for living expenses for undergraduate students. Graduate students receive 24 credits of tuition and a stipend of $15,000. FLAS Summer Fellowships are awarded for a full summer of intensive study for any South Asian language approved by the South Asia Center. Those fellowships provide $5,000 toward tuition and an additional stipend of up to $2,500. Students must also apply to one of the approved summer language programs. |
